We notice that the proprietor of a considerable portion of the frontage of the limestone gorge intends to dispose of it by public auction. It is highly desirable that this property should be secured for the public, either by the Borough Corporation or by the General Government. With the probability of extensive public works going on requiring a vaat quantity of rock, it would be ■ sheer stupidity to allow the opportunity now offered of obtaining possession of valuable quarries to slip past, and to get into private hands. The stone is certain to be required, and we would suggest that the Borough Council should communicate with Mr Higginson, who is expected to arrive to-day, and endeavor to induce the General Government to purchase it. But perhaps, after all, the most simple way would be for the Council itself to acquire it.
