During the last year, according to the report of the Commissioner of Annuities, there were 1400 proposals for insurance, which amounted to L 547,800. Of these 309 were rejedted, representing L 120,750. The gross annual income of the department was increased L 16.429. There were nine claims on the fund amounting to L2BOI. The New Zealand Steam Shipping Company advertise their fleet of ateamera for sale by tender. They are the Phoebe, Taranaki, Wellington, Ladybird, R*ugatira, collier Ann and Jane, and coal hulk European. Ohristchuroh, May 22. The wheat market is firmer, owing to recent advices from Melbourne, but a material rise has. b§en qhegked ,by the, English market. Farmers are getting 4s 6d to 4s Bd, millers giving the latter price. Prime samples, of flour, Ll2V> Ll3; sharps, L 6 10a per ton ; bran and oatmeal, the same as last week j barley not so firm, malsters having stocked for a time at 43 9d to 5s ; butter, scarce at 11 id to 12£ d; cheese, in good demaud at 6d ; bacon and hams, B|d in Christeburch; potatoes, a brisk trade ; the crop is turning out below expectations, and short deliveries in consequence at 603 to 65s delivered in Ohristchurch. Dunijdin, May 22. Considerable sensation has been caused by the publication in the Times of two telegrams from Judge Ward to Mr Yogel, dated April, in which Judge Ward asked Mr Yogel to suspend Judge Chapman until the General Aj&embly. meets, and send Ju4ge Johnston down to try the case Macassey v. Bell for libel. Ward says that Chapman is. an interested party because his son is a partner with Macassey, and himself is godfather to Macasaey's child, and Judge Chapman only works through Macassey, Peter Gibson and William Harrow have been nominated for the vacant seat in th§ City Council. Pobt Chalmers, May 22. Endeavors are being made to establish a Sailors' Home here. The Superintendent is in favor of it being a Provincial Institution. A persistent system of crimping has been carried on some time, and such an establishment, it is thought, would render it less prevalent.
