NELSON PROVINCIAL COUNCIL. [tkom a correspondent.] Nelson, May 15. Mr Ivess moved for the appointment of an additional constable at Keefton. Mr Shepherd opposed, urging that the Inspector had not recommended it. The motion wa3 lost by 10 against 7. Mrßoase moved and carried the appointment of a Select Committee to. inquire as to the amount paid by the Government to the Ballarat Company for mining plant, : and what amount the Government had received from the present lessees; also the amount paid for valuation of plant. Mr Wastney moved and carried a motion I for returns of the cost of the late tour of the Executive through the Gold-fields. Mr Donne moved, as an amendment to the Council going into Committee on the Estimates—" That the Estimates are not framed for the present requirements of the Province— the Executive and Departmental expenditure being in excess, and that the Council refer back the Estimates to the Superintendent for reconsideration." This was carried by 11 against 10. Mr Tarrant moved a -further amendment, to strike out the words — " The Council refer back the Estimates," . which was carried on the voices. The Government is disappointed at this defeat. Mr Ivess has tabled, a notice of motion — " That in the opinion of this Council, the powers which the Governor is authorised under the Gold-fields Act to delegate to Superintendents of Provinces ought, in the case of Nelson, be delegated to the Superintendent' and Executive, as provided for by Section 2 of : the Goldfields Act, 1867.
