Nelson, May 14
In the Council last night, Mr Maguire moved — " That the Engineer be requested to effect a survey from Deep Creek to No Town, for the purpose of ascertaining the best method of providing water for mining purposes." — Carried.
Mr Maclean moved — "That the Superintendent be requested to take steps to proclaim the lock-up at Lyell a gaol."
Mr Boase moved — "For the appointment of a Select Committee to inquire into and report on the losses sustained by Cobden encroachments of the Grey River ; such Committee to recommend some equitable plan, so that the persons whose land has been washed away, may be put into possession of fresh sites from unoccupied land. The Committee to consist of Messrs Tarrant, Corbett, Gibbs, Maclean, Kelling, Shepherd, and the mover." — Carried.
Mr Boase also moved — " That the Superintendent urge upon the Government the necessity of erecting protective works at Cobden as a part of the general plan for improvement of the harbor of Greymouth."
Mr Corbett moved—" That the Superintendent be reg nested to urge upon the Government the importance of gazetting regulations to bring into effect the, act of the General Assembly, ' The Miners Extension Act.' "—Carried. j
The Provincial Secretary, in reply to Mr Oorbett, as to whether effect had, beta
given to a motion of last session ,in re the survey of the Napoleon Race, stated that the survey was in hand, but he was unable to state when the Government would consent to the race.
Mr Maclean moved — "That it is desirable fo procure the extension of the telegraph line from Lyell to Nelson by way of the Buller Valley." — Carried.
Mr Adams moved for a detailed return of L 349 153 Id expended on the Railway Pete— Carried.
All motions for additions to Supplementary Estimates have been postponed.
A notice of motion has been given that the Estimates are not framed in accordance with the present circumstances and requirements of the Province.
Mr Corbett has moved that the Superintendent make provision to the extent of LU,OOO in the Loan Bill for water supply to the No Town district.
The Treasurer recommended the withdrawal of the motion till next session, when the fate of the Loan Bill will be known. The motion was withdrawn.
