Calumny got a lead of a couple of lengths, Yatterina second, and Kakapo lying a few lengths behind. In this order they ran until they reached the turn below the dip, where Kakapo went np and passed Yatterina, Calumny falling back. The colt led down the back of the course and looked like winning, but by the time he reached the old brewery the weight had told on him, and Fiench got the lead befure he reached the turn to the run home. Jones here endeavored to get up with Calumny, but it was evident that it was not in the mare to do this, although she passed her stable companion and secured second place, while the Auckland mare held it all her own way at the finish, and won by three lengths. Time, 3 rain. 19 sec. Handicap Steeplechase of 60 soys, added to a Bweepatakeof 4 soys each, h ft, second horse to save his stake. About three miles. Mr R. E. M 'Sac's b g Rustic, aged, 12st 71b (Mr W. Nicholson) ... .... 1 Mr M'Rae's ns eh g Wouldn't-you-Like- . to-Know, 4yrs, 9 t(Mr Q. Nicholson) 2 Mr Kerr's eh g Butcher Boy, aged, list 7!bs (MrSayle). ... *. ... 3 Mr Hope's bk in Heiress, aged, lOst (Owner) ... ... Q The betting in this race had fluctuated considerably. On the proceeding evening Butcher Boy had a decided call, but on the course .Rustic, was backed freely against the field. - ; .-' Butcher Boy rushed off with thft lead was first over the fence,: the other three following a few lengths behind. Mr Sayle went on with the running,- all the horses taking their jumps kindly in succession, until 1 c reached the cross-road at the back of Mr Nicholson's farm, when Butcher Boy balked, and his rider came to grass. Rustic here got the lead which he carried throughout . the race, followed by his stable companion Wouldn't-yon-like-to- Know, balking only at the last fence, as did the second horse, but the two came in a long way in advance of the other pair, Rustic winning by three lengths. Had- the four year old been in good condition he . undoubtedly would lave won the race. He was exceedingly well and pluckily ridden by Mr G. Nicholson. Handicap Hurdli Race, of 40 soys. One mile and a half, over fight flights of huidles. Nominations, 2 sovu. attempting to run round, but was eventually brought back and got to take his jump, but Heiress was lengths before him. The running between the two leaders was a neck and neck affair to the finish, both taking their jumps simultaneously ; Tommy Dodd, after clearing the last hurdle, making a splendid run up the distance, with Butcher Boyfldgguig at his girths, but never able to get to his head. Heiress was a bad third, the colt was pulled off after taking the second hurdle. , Nelson Uup, of 75 sove. Weight for age. 31b allowed to mares and geldings. Entrance, 5 soys. Two miles. Mr Redwood's br c Kakapo, 3 yrs, Bst lib (Sutherland) '. ... 1 Mr Walters' b m Yatterina, aged, 9at 91b (French) ... 2 Betting : 6 to 4 on Kakapo. Yatterina led at a blow pace for the first mile, when it began to quicken. The mare continued to lead until the last. turn was approached, when the ! colt wehtiip. and won with ease. Time, 4min. District Plate, of 25 soys, Cup weights, for horses which have been bonajide owned by residents in the Province of Nelson for at least, three months- previous to the. races. Entrance, 3 soys. One and a half mile. Mr R. E. M'Rae's b c Monarch, 3 yrs (Sutherland) ... ... 1 Mr Trask's bk m Azalea, aged (Bright)... 2 Mr Sayle ns b g Volunteer, aged (Martin) 0 Mr Hunter's g g Kiwi (late Rustic), aged (Hagan) ... ... ... . ..; 0 Betting : Even on Monarch against the field. Azalea was first away, and she carried the lead on to the Stand, where she was joined by Monarch, and the two ran a good race, which, however, was never in doubt, and was won by a length. Time, 2miu 58sec. Volunteer and Kiwi had no kind of show. :■'-':' Free Handicap, of 40 soys, 3 soys toac ceptors. Jones eased his mare when he saw her stable companion ; had Yatterina safe. Time, 2min 55sec.
