Dunedin, April 23. The total population of Otago by the census is 84,000 showing an increase of more that 15,000 since the last census. The result of to-day's polling for Mr Bathgate's seat is— Wales, 632 ; Barton, 542 ; Grant, 39. A great many bottle licenses have been refused to storekeepers, and several public bars abolished, as the law is distinctly laid down that no public-house should have more than one bar. The transhipment of immense waterpipes for the Kanieri Water-race has been commenced. They will be taken by the schooner Zior. * Other vessels will also be chartered. The pipes are turning out in first-olass order.
