Wellington, April] 3. The.Hutt railway will be opened tomorrow without any demonstration. The Governihent have been reluctantly compelled to adopt this course, owing to the quantity of rolling-stock on the line being so limited as to make it impossible to convey any large number of persons. The whole of the Woodlark's immigrants sent to Wanganui obtained employment immediately, at satisfactory rates. A telegram has been received from the Agent-General, dated April 2, announcing as despatched for the Colony during March, the following vessels :— -Bucking.
ham, Hmdostan, Caroline, and Carlsruhe, for Otago, with 1500 souls ; Northampton, City of Dunedin, and Stonehouse, for Lyttelton, 1320 souls; Peeress (name of place not decipherable, but supposed to be Timaru), with 260 souls ; Ushant and Queen of Nations, for Auckland, with 630 souls ; Waikato, for Wellington, 370 souls; Halcione, for Napier, 340 souls. The plant shipped in these vessels include 2820 tons rails, and fastenings seventeen carriages, four brakes, four horse boxes, two trucks, one steam crane, twenty-five sets waggon irons, two engines, and 150 tarpaulins. Dunedin, April 13. In consequence of the non-arrival of the Alhambra from the north, the English mail is postponed till to-morrow. " Dr Honeywell has been found guilty of manslaughter, through malpractice to a , woman during childbirth, when both mother and infant died. The sentence is deferred. The nomination to return a member to the House of Representatives, in place of Mr Bathgate, took place to-day. Three candidates were proposed— George Elliott Barton, Captain Wales, and J..G. Grant. Auckland, March 13. The election of Joseph May for the Franklyn district for the General Assembly is considered certain. It is stated that the General Government intend to grant a loan of L 50,000 at 6 per cent, to the Thames compauies to test the deep level on that gold-field. At the South British Insurance Company's half-yearly meeting to-day showed L 52,714 now invested, and LIO,OOO added to the rfiserve fund, making it L 20,000. Half-a-crown per share was added to pay up the capital, and L 7822 carried forward. Nelson, April 13. The population of the Province is 22,521 ; last census, 22,507. The principal falling off is in the Grey Valley. The city has increased 319. Bluff, April 13. Arrived, yesterday, the William Davie, with 289 immigrants, all well. She is 85 days out from London. Nine deaths of infants during the passage.
