GREY VALLEY ROAD BOARD,
A meeting of persons residing in the upper Grey Valley, and liable to become latepayers, was held, at the Court House, Ahaura, on Monday. 6th inst., to elect a member of the Local Revenue Board for the sub-district of Ahaura, in the room of Mr Robert Alcorn, of Totara Flat, who was a member of the Board previously, but retired in rotation in the first week in April. Mr Percy Wakeneld was in the chair, and opened proceedings by reading his authority from MrJ. W. Jones, the Chairman of the Road Board, to conduct the election. Mr- Wakefield also read the advertisement in the Weekly Akgos pon vening the meeting, and called upon the electoi'3 present to nominate eligible perjsons for election. Mr M, H. Hayden proposed that Mr Robert Alcorn be reelected, and remarked that the mining commercial interest and were already well represented in the Local Revenues Board; and it 'was fair and necessary that the important agricultural interest of the valley should also have a representative i Mr Alcorn was chosen at the election of the members of the first board, and although his attendance at the meeting of the board, had not, owing to circumstance over which he had no control, been as regular as could be deserved, still he had not forfeited the confidence and good opinion of the electors. Mr E. Fraser seconded the nomination of Mr Alcorn, and expresssd a hope that he would be elected unanimously. The Local Revenue Board would shortly be called upon in fulfillment of its functions to raise money by means. .nf local taxation, and it was of importance that the farmers, who would as property holders, have to bear a large proportion of the taxation imposed by the Local Revenue Act, should be represented at the board. Mr Alcorn was not alone a fitting representative of the agricultural interest; but his good business qualities^ and great experience, would make, his presence at the deliberations of the board valuable to the whole of the the electors: Mr Fraser concluded by trusting that Mr Alcorn would be re-elected without opr position ; in fact he was perfectly certain the electors present would unanimously pay Mr Alcorn that compliment. j The Chairman enquired if there were any other candidates to be proposed,* when an elector present said he did in--tend to propose a candidate, but as it was clear to him, from the feeling of the meet-j ing, the election of Mr" Alcorn was a foregone conclusion with the majority- of those present, he would not expose his, candidate to the risk and expense of a contest and probable defeat. After waiting the iisual time, and no other candidate being proposed, the chah> man declared Mr Robert Alcorn duly elected. Mr Hayden thanked'the-elec-tors on behaif of Mr Alcorn, and ex\ plained that that gentleman was absent through being still confined to his house,' in qonsequence of the serious accident which had recently occurred to him, X vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
