Tho New Zealand Steam Company are thinking of placing a steamer on the Auckland aud Fiji trade. The company applied to the Government for compensation for'the detention of the Phoebe in quarantine at Lyttelton with Government immigrants, but the application was' refused. The Taranaki is detained until the arrival of the Mongol to-morrow with the mails. Wellington, April 4. Saunders and O'Malley, Wellington contractors, are the successful tenderers for the reclamation of 49 acres. ' Tenders ranged from L 56.000 (accepted) to LI 20,000. It is estimated that the work will occupy two years and a half, with 100 hands employed, and that the commercial value of the land when completed will be L4OOO per acre. The General Government contribute one-fifth of the contract price so as to entitle them to land for a railway station and other purposes.
