The operation of Mr Fox's new Licensing Act is nkely to have a most unfortunate effect noon the brewing industry in Wellington. The Poet says that the list ef applications fur wholesale licenses does not include the names of either of the Wellington brewery , who, no doubt, were under the impression that as they held licenses under the Distillation Act it waii not necessary for them to apply for licenses under Mr Fox's J> ct. Unfortunately, this impression is an erroneous one, and oar brewers will have either to shut up iheir breweries for a year, .or incur a penalty of not more than LSO for each sale they make. The 6th clause of the Act enacts that '* no person unless he be duly licensed under this Act shall sell any alcoholic liquors, or permit, or suffer the same to be -•old by any other person on bis behalf," and and clause 2 defines the expression alcoholic liquors to " mean and include every description of distilled spirits, wipe, ale, beer, cider, perry or other fermented liquors of an intoxicating nature.' It has already been held that the Licensing Act being passed subsequently Jo the Distillation Act, and not containuig ,any, exception in favor of liceuses under tWj Itttfir, it is necemry for them to be lioeued under -both Acts.
