WRECK OF THE BRIG SILVER LINING AT KAKANUI.

The Silver Lining, Captain Turner, arrived at Kakanui from Lyttelton; with a cargo of about; 34o tons. coal, on the 2nd inst, and had discharged about 150 tons by the night of Friday, 6th. On Saturday morning it was raining, and the wind moderate. In the afternoon. the wind increased from the southward", when the brig slipped her cable and put-tpsea. : : On Sunday she was almost becalmed, and yesterday morning stood in, passiDg south with the wind S E. light at about l,pm. As she stood inshore the wiud.yeered to the eastward, the vessel comnp,to,head to Kakanni. On ncaring the North Reef,;it.was fouud that she would not weather it, aud an attempt was made to stay. The vessel missed stays, and the anchor,; was let go under-foot to club-haul her,. but before this could be done, the ship made) a -stern-board, and struck on ttie'tecf. Some time before this sigDal was made from the flagstaff, "You are standing into danger," but no notice appears to have been taken on board. Immediately on the vessel's striking at about 3 50 p m , signal was made to the Wallabi, then lying in the roadstead, and the, steamer at once proceeded to her assistance. By the time a hawser had been made fast, it was found that the brig was filling, and the. attempt to tow her off proved unsuccessful, she haying settled, dowa on the reef. A survey Hvas held by Captain Leys',' of the Wallabi, , and Captain Crawford, and these gentlemen finding that the brig would be a totyl wreck, recommended her immediate dismantling, in order to gave. anything possible; " The sails were then unbent, and, together .with- the crew's kits and other moyeable.s, . were sent ashore. When Captains Leys and' Crawford left the Silver Lining her deck forward was under water, the- vessel being hung amidships on the reef, and having sunk by the head iiifour fathoms of water. She was owned in Sydney., and had been recently copperei aud re-classed. She was valued; at L3UOO,' and is believed to be uninsured. She has since been sold for LSO.
