The Silver Lining, Captain Turner, arrived at Kakanui from Lyttelton; with a cargo of about; 34o tons. coal, on the 2nd inst, and had discharged about 150 tons by the night of Friday, 6th. As she stood inshore the wiud.yeered to the eastward, the vessel comnp,to,head to Kakanni. On ncaring the North Reef,;it.was fouud that she would not weather it, aud an attempt was made to stay. The vessel missed stays, and the anchor,; was let go under-foot to club-haul her,. but before this could be done, the ship made) a -stern-board, and struck on ttie'tecf. Some time before this sigDal was made from the flagstaff, "You are standing into danger," but no notice appears to have been taken on board. Immediately on the vessel's striking at about 3 50 p m , signal was made to the Wallabi, then lying in the roadstead, and the, steamer at once proceeded to her assistance. By the time a hawser had been made fast, it was found that the brig was filling, and the. attempt to tow her off proved unsuccessful, she haying settled, dowa on the reef.
