A most magnificent sample of coal from the " Wallsend " drive of the Greymouth Coal Company was brought to town yesterday, and placed for view in the offices of Messrs G. W. Moss and Co. The specimen referred to was originally sft long x 2ft Gin x 2ft, and weighed over scwt, but by some accident a portion of the block was cracked off near one end. A finer specimen of coal was never seen ; it is compact, bright, and free from any extraneous substance, and shows that the complaint of the friability of the Grey coal is quite without any other foundation than that it has hitherto been worked in a slovenly fashion. The sample we are noticing was taken from the 14ft seam underneath Alabaster's Hotel, and it is the intention of the Company to sink a shaft down upon it as soon as possible. It is expected that the coal can be reached at a depth of about 60 yards, and tenders for the work will shortly be called. We heartily congratulate the Greymouth Coal Company upon the very brilliant prospects which are presented to them.
