THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW.

[to the editor.] Sir— Now that the third meeting of the above society has closed successfully, I wish to draw the attention of the committee to a practice which, if not put a stop to, will ultimately have '.the effect of keeping a large number 1 of exhibitors from sending articles to ihe show — I allude to the wholesale plunder of fruits, vegetables, &c, which tajkes place at the close of every exhibition. iNo doubt it is very nice for our young rhen to escort their friends there, and to assist them liberally when they are tired' of looking at the flowers, to apples, plums, strawberries, and other delicacies, at other people's expense, as it saves the young men's pockets; but this thing must have an end, as exhibitors will very soon jget tired of showing their nicest productions if their ultimate destination, is to be the. capacious maw or pocket of some who could be named, to whom nothing comes amiss,, from a child's bouquet to a dozen s;eed potatoes. Either those "respectable larrikins" must be. excluded or muzzled. if the Greymouth Horticultural Society 13 to continue a success, or some guarantee given that exhibits will be protected. 1 can readily forgive children taking them, "as 'tis their nature to," but to see men who ought to know better, coolly appropriating whatever they may take a fancy to is too much for one of many . : Unfortunate Exhibitors. Greymouth, Jan. 29, 1874. i
