CRICKET.

KETCHN MATCH. AHAURA V. GREYMOtrTH. The return match between the Ahaura Cricket Club and our local team took place last Saturday in the Court House Reserve. The wickets were pitched at | about half-past ten, and the up-country : eleven having won the toss, elected to put their opponents in first, Messrs Martin and Howie handling the willow to the bowling of Messrs Wethered and Close. None of the Greymouth men made a good innings. Mr Newton's was the best for 7. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Paul, of tbe Greymouth eleven, the Captains of the teams agreed to allow a substitute to take his place, when, to tbe astonishment of everyone, Mr Martin, nf the Greymouth team, refused to play any more. This at first was regretted, but when Mr Masters put on the wicket-keeping gloves Mr Martin's retirement was found, to have been agaifl, for Mr Masters, although the first time tlnit that gentleman . has officiated as wicket-keeper in a match, proved himself to be the best, (with the exception of Mr Mace, of Hokitika) that ever played on the Greymouth ground. Messrs Heaphy o,nd Twohill bowled well for Greymoutb, and for the Grey Valley Mr Satellite batted with his usual care, and succeeded in making the first double figure. In Grey mouth's second innings, Mr Dan Twohill ran up the good soore of 28, and Mr Newton's 36, not out, was made by very careful play. From the first it seemed that lock waa dead against the visitors, most of their best players coming out very unfortunately, two being run out in the first innings, and a like number in the second, and they also had to field in the rain during Greymouth's second innings. By the appended scores it will be seen 'that Greymouth won easily by 74 runs. The umpires, Messrs Hall and James Turner gave universal satisfaction, as did Mr Whitefoord, who kindly officiated as scorer. in the evening the visitors were entertained at Waters's Hotel.
