It will be seen by our telegrams that Messrs Kout, Pitt, Greenfield, and Acton Adams have been elected members of the Provincial Council for the city of Nelson, Mr Burn, who had been twice a member and a very useful one, being among the defeated candidates. Of those elected, three had previously been members of the Council, Mr Rout being the only stranger, but he is by no means new to public duties, having hitherto taken active part in many public movements, and especially in connection with the work of the socalled Inland Communication Committee. He is an avowed opponent of Mr Curtis, and is likely to be among the leaders of any reforms which the new Council may desire to initiate. A strong attempt, we are informed, was made to turn out the •present Provincial Secretary, Mr Greenfield, but it wa9 futile, and the result is rightly or wrongly accepted as an indication of the success of Mr Curtis, on whose behalf powerful committees are now being formed both in Nelson city and in the country districts.
