The Golden Fleece Company have declared a dividend of eighteenpence per. share, an LIBOO dividend. Westpobt, Nov. 1. The steamer Result, drawing 4ft, has returned from Ngakawhau cargoless, although the sea wa3 perfectly smooth. The bar has closed, the sand banks on either side having flattened and silted ;the entrance. -Laden . pack-hones can ford there' easily. The captain of the Result will not attempt the entrance until the next fresh. A North Ngakawhau Company has been started, to obtain a light draught steamer, to run between Ngakawhau Inlet and the Buller, making a coal depot at the latter. Wanganui, Noy. 1. The Luna crossed the bar at' B a.m., and landed the Governor, Sir James Fergusson, at 10. The Mayor presented an address, and Major Kemp, a Maori address. A salute of eighteen guns was fired. There was a Volunteer escort to the Rutland Hotel. There was no levee but a public lunch at one p.m., at which 150 were present. There was great enthusiasm. The Governor goes on horseback to visit the Hon. Mr Fox.
An application was made 10-day by Mr Travora f or the discharge of the Tapsc'ott prisoners, and was refused on the' ground that; under the 12th section of ; Act; two months must date from the decision of habeas corpus, not from the original commitment. The application may be renewed after the 26th if the prisoners have not left the colony. : New Plymouth, Nov. 1. The polling for the Superintendence is appointed for the 10th. Candidates are now! canvassing— -Carrington is strong in Newi Plymouth J; Atkinson a majority at Patea; Brown nowhere. Mr M'Leod proceeds to Canada as emigration agent in the interests of Otago. He is now on a tour through Southland. He has viaited several parts of the interior, and is much impressed with the suitability of the district for the Ideation of immigrants, and astonished , to find the advanced condition and magnitude of agricultural operations carried on here. A report has been received: from Orepuki in regard to the seam of coal and shale discovered, to the effect .that the shale has been tested in a retort, and, produced oil which readily ignited,- and burned freely. The diggers there are using shale, instead of kindling, to lightfires. • ; -Auckland, Nov. 1. ; The Alice Cameron has arrived after seven days run, She brings.
