Two months' consideration, or as much consideration as he could give to the matter amid the multitude of his business engagements, has enabled the Minister of Public Works to make answer to the representations of the residents of Greymouth on the proposed plan of bringing the railway into town. That answer is adverse. On the 11th of July, according to the wishes of the Borough Council and the burgesses, the Town Clerk communicated with the Public Works Office at WeJUngjbon, and on the 11th instant the Under-Secpetary, Mr Knowles, replied to this effect '.—"I am djxepfced by the Hon. Mr Richardson to acknowledge the receipt

of your Jotter of the I.lbli July, in which you forward a copy of a resolution passed at a puolic meeting off the inhabitants of Greymouth, in which v ; h e Government is requested to consider /the advisability of bringing the railway j Q to Greymouth on a level with the Qu^y, and in reply to inform you that, having submitted the question of level to th 4 Engineer-in-Chief, the advantages of a hi^h. level are reported to be so essential to tb c loading of vessels at all states of thd^lfide and giving free access to tho river baink, that the Government are unable %> comply with the request contained in phe resolution abovementioned. I am to add that means have been devised by the Engineer-in-Chief for the discharge of coal from the railway into the ships- at the wharf which will remove many of] the objections that have been urged against the high level at which it is proposed; tho railway should enter the town." Ifc.may not be public etiquette to solicit, or professional etiquette to offer, plans of the " means that have been devised" for such purpose as that here referred to ; but the position at present is that, while the public and property-holders knew previously -what kind of contrivance was contemplated, and how far it was objectionable, they don't know now.
