•; : We are still without any notice of the arrival of the sB. Claud Hamilton from Melbourne, off Hokitika. It is probable that her departure was. delayed until Saturday last, so that her arrival may be expected on to-day's tide. She comes on here, and takes passengers for all New Zealand ports, and also for Melbourne, via the Bluff. Yesterday forenoon the tuu Titan brought to the wharf the schooner Garibaldi, from Westport, in ballast. The'p.s. Wallace, Captain M •Arthur, arrived yesterday from Neson, via Westport and Hokitika. She will leave again this afternoon for Westport and Nelson. ! A' Parliamentary return shows that the light dues collected at the various ports last year, were L 6845. Lighthouses cost L 5277. The prime coat of lighthouses already erected has been t.58,909. • The schooner Challenge has be*n condemned for a breach of the Kidnapping Act. The ship Countess Russell, from Stockhampton to Newcastle, has become a total wreck on the beach between Baffle Creek and Bustard Head. No lives were lost , " A very sad and fatal accident occurred on board the ship Cape Clear, which took a number of the Dallam Tower's passengers t(i Sydiiey, while on her passage to that port. On July .25," says the Sydney Morning Herald, " The day previous to her failing in with the Dallam Tower, the ship running before a stiff breeze and high sea, an apprentice i named Alfred Jones fell from the mizzen-topgallant rigging, striking the ship's rail, and going overboard." Immediately on the alarm being given a life-buoy was thrown to him, and before anyone could interfere, a fellow-apprentice named William Dunnall sprang over the side to assist his shipmate. A boat with four hands was promptly lowered, and pulled in the direction pointed out from the ship ; but after an absence of over an hour was compelled to return withbuthaving succeeded in picking Up either of the unfortunate boys."— Argus. , Captain Anthony, of the barque Medea, which arrived in Corio Bay, from Newcastle, lately reports that on the eighth day from Newcastle, having reached Cape Liptrap,;he met a heavy gale from the north-west, which was so 8 yere that the barque drifted, dnd he was obliged to put back to Rabbit Island, where the vessel was windbound five days. On the 18th. he manned the boat, went ashore, and found on the beach, between Rabbit Island and Sealer's Cove, a large boat of a ship 400 tons register, built of hardwood, which was in a sound state, with the exception that rue or two planks had starred. : The boat had apparently not been long inlthe Bea» there being only a few barnacles upon it. The name was obliterated, but the boat had originally been painted a lead color, and the captain thinks it is just such a boai as might, have belonged to the barque Dunkeld, : which went to pea about three years since arid was not afterwards heard of. — Argus. The latest advices from San Francisco show that notwithstanding the enormous shipments which have taken place since! the beginning of January, the st cks of wheat in and about San Francisco are daily increasing, whilst there is a great lack of shipping in the port; in fact, there Avas at the latest accounts sufficient" freight, in. the shape of wheat, in San Francisco to load 250 ships. „ There are at present 103 grain laden vessels afloat to the English Channel from han Francisco, and 88 of these are bound to Liverpool. The average number of bags of wheat which each of these vessels has on board is 25,000, so that there is. now ail at to Liverpool alone no less than 2,200,000 bags of wheat.
