GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
THE GREY COAL RESERVE.
PROMISE OF FURTHER PROTEC-
TIVE WORKS.
[from our own correspondent.]
Wellington, Sept. 4. Mr Harrison moved the second reading of the Coal Reserve Bill last night. He pointed out that when the reserve was gazetted in 1866 it was for the purpose of improving the navigation of the river and the improvement of the township. He urged strongly the claims of the Corporation to an endowment to assist them in maintaining the wharf and protective works.
Mr Yogel asked that the Bill should be withdrawn. It was the intention of the Government to spend a considerable sum upon harbor works at Greymouth, and they were prepared to keep the reserve in i their own hands.
Mr Harrison, in reply, expressed his satisfaction that the Government intended to extend the works at Greymouth, and was willing that they should keep possession of the reserve. He therefore withdrew the Bill.
