GENERAL ASSEMBLY
[ANGIiO- AUSTRALIAN PRESS TELEGRAPH AGENCY.] Wellington, Aug. 21. In the House to-day Mr O'Neill moved the reduction of a sixpence per ounce on the duty on gold. Mr Yogel was sorry to be obliged to oppose the motion. A mint was to be established for ,the purpose of preventing combination amongst bankers. The reduction might benefit Auckland, abut not Otago or Westland. He was sorry a reduction' had been made last year. It was not a tax on >. The Gold-fields members should be~ glad that others opposed the reduction. Mr O'Conor. and Mr J. L. Gillies supported the motion. Mr. White argued against the duty as a special tax, and urged the absurdity of levying a special tax on an industry already heavily taxed. Mayor Atkinson opposed the motion. He said the question was one of royalty, not special taxation. Mr Fox supported the motion. He said the understanding last year was that the reduction would be gradual each yeir. Mr Sheehan opposed, on the ground that the Assembly had no right to remove the revenue of the Provinces. . , Mr Buckland said that unless the tax were continued, Auckland Province would become insolvent. Mr Reader Wood supported the motion. The debate was , interrupted by the arrival of the dinner hour. .
