The proposed endowment to literary institute's lapsed, Messrs Bonar, Cassius, arid Barff were appointed members of the Contract Committee during the recess. Reference was made to the Hokitika and : Greymouth:Tramway compensation, and the Chairman stated that a writ for ; L 20,000 had been served on him, but nothing special was arrived at on the subject. Mr Barff moved that the report of the Council w re the Kawhaka toll-gate be, forwarded to the Minister of Justice, but the resolution was negatived . The Auditor's report was ordered not to be printed. The Chairman stated, in regard to the honorarium, that he would decline to divide it. Mr Cuming proposed— •" -That the vote of L 225 be divided thus ;---Messrs Dungan and O'Donovan, L4O each ; Messrs Barff, Smith, Kennedy,, and Ciumrig,,L3.o jeach ; Messrs Bonar and Cassius, Ll2 los each." The Hokitika Star says : — " A most unseemly and disjrracef ill discussion followed, during which Messrs Cassius and J)ungan retired, and the Council was necessarily adjourned, as th^re was not- a quorum remEiining." „.• , „
