THE GYMPIE REEFS.
Another grand crushing from claims Nos. 7 and 8 south, Moukland, is thus reported upon by the Gympie Times : — On this occasion 520 tons have yielded the fine return of 35100z ldwt 18gr of retorted gold, or an average of nearly seven ounces no the ton, being very considerably in excess f f what wa3 anticipated by the holders whenstone waa first commenced to be put through the machine. This is the ninth crushing which has taken place frpm this splendid mine since the beginning of 1871 ; the total number of tons of quartz reduced up to the present time has been 4007J which have yielded 21,9130z 3dwt 18gr, or over five ounces to the ton. To give a further idea of the remarkable richness of the stone' which has been produced by the ground we may state that the last four returns which have been obtained by the fortunate owners have respectively been 40280z, 59720z, 36300z2dwt, and 35100z ldwt 18gr. These four crushings. have been taken out during the last .twelve months. The one which yielded 36300z 2dwt was finished only so late as April 2 last; at that time, however, there was still a large quantity of quartz left in the paddock ; consequently the 520 . tons recently reduced have not been all raised since. We cannot forget when looking over the foregoing splendid returns that at one time some of the shareholders of the claim were so disheartened that the abandonment of their shares, or their sale for a mere song, was seriously taken into consideration'; this circumstance has been related before, but it will bear repeating in these times when shareholders in companies are inclined to become very despondent because payable stone is not being raised in the miners in which they have invested.
