ANOTHER COBDEN COMPLAINT.

"More Officialdom" is the title, and " Coal Creek Owl " the signature to the following letter which appears in the columns of the Nelson Examimr : — I beg you will favor me with a small space for the purpose of furnishing the public with a few facts relative to the conduct of the Provincial authorities of Nelson towards Cobden. His Honor the Superintendent recently paid a hurried visit to Cobden, his object being to ascertain the wants and wishes of the district. In obedience therewith, myself, together with others, waited upon him and pointed out to him the urgent necessity of protecting Cobden from the encroachment of the Grey River; and also showed his Honor the serious lo3s and inconvenience we are subjected ta for the want of a dray-road on the eastern approach to Cobden. We not only received his assent to our wants in this respect, but he also granted our request that certain projective stone should be reserved for our protective works, and accordingly left|instructions with Mr Dent, Manager of the Brunner Mine, to. acquaint Mr Dobson, Provincial Engineer, that his Honor wished him to lay off that portion of stone for the Greymouth protection works (which had been previously applied for),, the removal of which would facilitate the formation of the road we asked, for, and not those which were more convenient for our own use, and which his Honor said should not be removed. -When Mr Dobson arrived he was duly acquainted with the Superintendent's orders, but to our surprise treated it with the utmost contempt, consequently the stone promised to be reserved for our protective works are being used for that of Greymouth, and notwithstanding that a telegram has since been received from the Superintendent to the effect that Mr Dobson has been instructed to stop the removal of the stones immediately, they are still being taken away. Now, I wish it to be thoroughly under 1 stood my motives do not emanate from the slightest desire to retard the progress of the Greymouth protective works, on the contrary, I wish them success. But the question arises, in whom is the authoritative power invested ? If in the 1 Superintendent, then let him exercise it with that dignity that becometh his position ; bnt, on the other hand,, if Mr Dobson is the ruling power, then we trust his Honor for the future will exercise more discretion in making his promises.
