OKARITO.

[from an occasional correspondent.] .•■■'.. '. ' ■'- Junel& ■-: ' On the Okarito River, Richard Arthur and party, are now testing some of the' high terraces bordering.this river. They are about bringing in a small race for that purpose,, and if these terraces prove as auriferous as they have been reported to be; Arthur and party will then turn their attention towards bringing in a larger race. ; Business people on the Five-Mils are grumbling very much, and not without a cause, for the Five-Mile has never been at such a low ebb as it is at present. Many of the miners have gone prospecting, and most of those remaining are stripping ground at great disadvantage to themselves, having, in many cases, to move the top stuff double the distance they originally would have to do. Nesbitt and party are now the sole proprietors of that large auriferous terrace bordering the Waiho. The second party, Callary, M'Kenria, and Co., have left, as they found the surplus water of the first right anything but sufficient to meet their requirements, thus showing that a large extent of auriferous country will for ever remain untouched, unless men of a specu.lative turn of mind are found to bring in a large water-race from a greater distance. At Gillespie's Beach, Mr O'Donovan's application has been decided against him. There is no other news of any account. The miners are bteadily working away. At Hunt's Beach there are about seventeen miners working, but they will soon be calling out for more water, as the main supply comes from the back lagoons, and does not last very long. A great amount of attention is turned towards the Omarua Creek. Many miners are anxiously awaiting the result of the first washing-up. Borneman and party will have their race completed shortly, but it is hard to say if they will be the 6rst party sluicing, as they have a great amount of preparatory work to do before they can use their water. I would warn miuers, non-residenta in the district, to put no credence in the fabulously manufactured reports of the richness of the claims up the Omarua. It is mere idle speculation for even the most experienced miners to offer an opinion as to how these claims may turn, out. The nomination of candidates for the vacant seats in the Okarito Road Board is to take place this day (Wednesday.^ It is rumored that Mr James Cooles is the only candidate in the field.
