Christchurch, July 18. Trent's chicory works at Templeton were totally destroyed by fire this morning. The fire broke out at ten minutes past one. The estimated damage is L6OOO ; all last season's crop of chicory was destroyed. There was no insurance on the property. Wellington, June 18. Shaw, Saville and Co. write to their agents here denying that Mr Marrison is, or ever has been interested in their firm. Dr Featherstone advises the departure of the following vessels: — Mary Shephard, for Lyttelk n, on May 10 ; Berar, for Auckland, on May 20; Al'ahabad, for Otago, on May 27 ; Punjaub, for Lyttelton, on May 30. All these would take 1200 statute adults, and applications for Australian passengers being large, a few more would probably leave for Auckland, in the City of Auckland, about the end of May. The Halcione was to sail for Wellington on the 18th April with 256 statute adults, and the Scheihellion to follow during May. Dr Featherston had invited tenders for ships to leave for Wellington on June 5, Napier on June 11, Auckland on June 17, Otago on June 23, Lyttelton on June 30. Mr Mackay reports having had a most satisfactory meeting with the Ngatirawkawa tribe. Purukurtu is reported to be at Kuiti. Dunedin, June 18. A^roKii^Np, June 18. The half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company has been held. A 10 per cent, dividend was declared, and L 15,000 was added to the reinsurance fund, raising it to L 45,000. LIOjOOO was added to, the reserve fi]nd, raising it to L 35,000. The balance carried forward to next half-year, after paying the dividend, is L 9045. The Fire and Marine premiums amount to LSI, 721. An appeal against the Education Act is being heard in the Supreme Court. Judgment is reserved until the case against the validity of the Wellington Education Act, now pending before the Appeal Court, is decided.
