Dxtnedin, June 14. The Taieri election resulted as follows : Shand, 330; Reid, 312; Allen, 294; Pain, 136 ; Webb, 80. The three first are elected. Messrs Mills and Orbell are elected for North Waikouaiti. Mr Pratt, the Mayor of Waikouaiti, and Mr Davie, of Dunedin, are candidates for the Waikouaiti seat in the General Assembly. Both are Ministerialists. June 15. The following are the full returns for the North Waikouaiti election : — Mills, 85; Orbell, 15. Flag Swamp -^Milk, 37 ; Orbell, 15,. Clutha— Major Richardson, 207 ; MacNeill, 151 ; Thompson, 140, After the Wairuna returns had been received, MacNeil was carried through the streets. Christchurch, June 14. The Council unaniirously resolved that in its opinion it is inexpedient that any alteration should be made in the law relating to the New Zealand U,nivers;ity, whereby benefits arising from that institution should be monopolised by any particular Province or Provinces. A man named Dearden has died from the effects of a coach accident on the Queen's Birthday. At the inquest the jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against the driver of the coach, Thomas )aborne Crisp, for having driven an overloaded coach without break or breeching, down a steep and slippery incline, at the bottom of which the coach capsized^ injuring deceased and other passengers. o'clock this evening. An immense crowd assembled to welcome them. All the shipping at the wharf burned lights and fired rockets. The fire brigade all carried torches.
