THE STRANDING OF THE MARY OGILVIE AT OAMARU.
[OTAGO DAILY TIMES.] On Tuesday morning, 6th inst., between four and five o'clock, a stiff N.E. wind commenced to blow right into the Oamaru Harbor. The position of the vessels at anchor became somewhat dangerous", and Captain Sewell, the Harbormaster, signalled to those, on board; to sail out. There were six vessels in harbor at the time — viz., the ' Margaret Campbell, Dagmar, Crest jpf the Wave, Maid of Otago, ( Mary Van Every, and MaryOgilvie. The four first-named contrived to make their escape in safety, but the Mary Ogilvie was not so fortunate. When beating out she missed stays, arid about ■ half-past seven drifted on to the beach, opposite to the Bank, of New Zealand. A hawser was at once ' fastened to her mainmast, and anchored in shore- This had the effect of keeping her upright to some extent, but the rollers strained her severely for a few hours. As soon as the tide fell she steadied, and immediate arrangements were made for discharging cargo. ; . ■ . The Mary Ogilvie is a smart schooner of 72 tons, register, 1 qiiite new, having, wd understand, been built at Port Chalmers not many months ago. She arrived at Qamaru onthe sth instant, from Dunedin, with part cargo from Westport, and some railway iron/ timber, '&c.; for Oamaru. Her owners are Mr Mowat "■■ (of Anderson and Mowat) and her master, Captain Falconer. The vessel is insured in the New Zealand and South British offices for LIOOO, and the cargo in various offices. It is hoped that the schooner will be got off without any seribus damage. At the^ time o f the accident the master was 1 ashore. A strong impression prevailed that the mishap might have been avoided 1 had sufficient canvas been set. The Mary Van Every Tbde out the storm during the; day/ but towards evening she began to drag. Sails were hoisted, and with some difficulty she succeeded in clearing put to sea. : ).■'■■ <■ ■■■ ■): ■-' ;•■
