A well-known character in Timaru, Thoa. Bottomley, the bellman, was found lying dead at the foot of a cutting immediately adjoining the premises of the Timaru Landing and J- hipping Company early on Wed. nesday morning last. ; The evidence elicited at the inquest showed that the poor fellow had been drinking somewhat freely the night before, and probably this was" a leading cause of wandering from the footpath,— which runs, we must say, most dangerously close to an excavation made in the'siae-of the hill by the N.Z.M;P. Company— and tumbling over the. cutting. ,His wife and children are left utterly destitute. ' A^subscription was raised up to date for the family, which amounted to about L2O.
