GREYMOUTH AND MARSDEN ROAD.

A public meeting wks held on Saturday at Rutherglen, to take into consideration the necessity of urging the Minister of Public _Works to .aUgr. the present survey so that it can be'jomecTto one from, Paroa through Rutherglen yatj a future time. The meeting was Well attended, ,and|. Mr Thomas Co]tqn^Chair^ man of the Road Board, presided. The Chairman said he thought all were acquainted with the object of .the meeting, and he was only surprised- that some action was not taken before by J the minors of Rutherglen, at it was a question of the utmost importance to them all. The various speakers pointed out the necessity of having the road brought out noar Yankee Creek, so that one can be joined to it from the beach ; and unless ihat was done, fchere would be a very distant prospect of any road being made through Rutherglen, and that it was of the most vital importance to the welfare of the district that such should bo done, for when the New River water-race was completed, the population would be greatly increased and the want of a road would militate against the prosperity of the district. I Mr Collins moved — " That this meeting protests against the course of the Greymouth and Marsden road, as being inaccessible to the main body of miners and others living at Rutherglen." Seconded by Mr Hughes and carried : unanimously. [ Mr Dobson" moved — " That it is for the welfare of the district that the road \ should diverge from the present survey . near the A A line, across flat country, i with abundance of metal, to Johnstone's i line, near Yankee Creek to present'suri yey, half-a-mile from Marsden. That this I course would permit of. the road contem- " plated by the Road Board being made to 1 loop on from Paroa. That in the course of a few months the New River Water / Race will be complete^ and population 7 increased one, hundred fold. That this » route Would be made for half the cost of *J the other, be a great benefit, and open up i more auriferous groutid'to miners, and be c no longer." j Mr Isbester seconded the mo{i r on, and '.. it was carried unanimously."-- ji/1 "~ d Mr Robinson proposed— "That 'the y Chairman be requested '"' 'to 1 4efßgfaph a these resolutions to the Minister ofcPublic ' Works." b Mr Hobe seconded- the motion, ; which c was carried unanimously. The meeting terminated with a vote of ' thanks to the Chairman.
