Dunedin, April 17. Negociations are completed for the absorption of the Bank of Otago by the National Bank. Mr Stout is appointed University Law Lecturer. Mr Larnach has purchased the Eyre Creek statiDr, 4000 acres |leasehold, and 5000 freehold ; and the Long Ridge station, 30,000 acres leasehold and 8000 freehold, for L 25,000 and L 34,000 respectively. Wellington, April 17. Westport is gazetted a municipality. The University Council has resolved not to receive any further applications for ad eundem degrees until next session. T. B. Malet is appointed Registrar ; Tancred, Chancellor; andCarleton, Vice-Chancellor, for five years. It was resolved to pass a statute that under-graduates of the New Zealand (Jniversity, who study at the Otago University, shall be admissable to a degree, after having kept three years' term, and passed the examinations prescribed by the New Zealand University. A resolution was passed affirming the desirability of the appointment of an Inspector of affiliated institutions, and that Governor Bowen's prize, of not less than L 5 per annum, be given for the best study on a subject to be named, aud open to all matriculated students who have not taken a degree. At a land, sale of Manawatu land, to-day, L 22,677 was realised, prices ranging from 203 to 60s per acre. The Provincial Government has circulated copies of a Bill it intends to introduce to authorise the raising of a loan of L 210,000 for the construction of certain works of public utility in the Province. It proposes that the Province should give the Colony security in land for the amount, and specifies proposed objeots of expenditure. Mr Reynolds is gazetted Colonial Secretary. Dune din, April 17. The Scar of the East crushing was 97ozs from 200 tons ; dividend declared of 3s. Ninety tons from the John Bull Co.'s stone gave 82ozs ; dividend of L2O per sixth share. Sailed— Zealandia, on the 27th. Mr Macassey was a passenger. She and the City of Dunedin race home ; large bets on the result. John Gibb, aged 19, is convicted of
rape on a girl eight years of age. Sentence was deferred.
