The brigantine Sarah and Mary, Captain Farrell, from Melbourne, arrived in, port yesterday morning, after a rapid passage passage from land to land. - Captain Farrell reports having left Port Phillip Heads on the 29th ult. he experienced light southerly and south-westerly winds for the first three three days, and afterwards southerly wind until she made the New Zealand coast on the §th, when she sighted Mount Cook sixty ' miles distant. She arriyedoff Grey mouth qnthe morning of Sunday/, the, 6th, and has been keeping off and on the, coast since that lime, waiting for the spring tides and an improvement in the state of the bar. She anchored off the- port'; on Thursday, and was towed in yesterday morning, over a smooth bar, with a sufficiently need but ; .somewhat narrow channel. Captain Farrell reports that, on the 2»id of the month, and in lat. i 41.14 south, and long. 155.54 east, a peculiar 1 sensation was felt on board, the probable effect of some electric shock or earthquake. It occurred at eleven 1 cfclock in the forenoon, and Was so distinctly felt on board that pascongers and crew rushed on de<ik> For about three seconds there was a quick vibratory ■mdvement felt in all parts of the vessel, somewhat similar to what : might be , experienced on a vessel, dragging/ over a Mingle bar. There was moderate Weather at thei time, with no peculiar atmospheric disturbance or heavy sea, and the impression is that the vibratory movement was the re- | suit of some sub-aqueous disturbance, seen as has occasionally been feltalong* the New Zealand coast, but not so frequently in positions such as that in which the Sarah and Mary was at the time. The Sarah and Mary bnngs five passengers an* a : fdl general • cared, greater « portion of wm*ch is consigned to her owners; Me^re Kennedy Brothers. She commences discharging to-c'ay. Another regular visitor to tba^fyorfc, also
bearing the niioe of the y §arab. and Mary;' tfas towed into port on/ Thursday, after having been for some i days in the roadstead. She bnngs a -cargo of Canterbury produce .with a cargo of producefrom In vercarjjill, reached port yesterday, after a montn'srvoyage, during which time she called at Milford Sound and Martin's Bay. It will be remembered .that,on.the. dj^, parture 01 tae J^ancy"Trom Invercargill, the desire was expressed that on her voyage up the coast she ! should keep a look-out for some sealing boats which had been out for^ *atfoWt£nTffonffis/ and". This was done, but.nothing was seen of the boats, for the excellent reason that, shortly after the Nancy's departure, the boats returned to Southland. They had been in Milford Sound previous to the Nancy's arrival there, and the report of what was seen by the crews is published in another column. The Nancy had about five tons of cargo for the Martin's Bay settlers, but, although she anchored off the mouth of the river, and a boat was seen on shore, none of the inhabitants of the settlement made their appearance, and she, proceeded on to Greymouth, arriving as stated. The steamship Alhambra is announced to be despatched from this port to-morrow (Sunday) for Melbourne direct. • She will bring on from Nelson the Rangitoto's passengers and mails. , .' :
