Yesterdaj the p.s. Dispatch was busily engaged, as she towed to sea the Gleaner for Melbourne, the Aurora for Lyttelton, the Sarah and Mary for Lyttehon, and the Bonnie Lass for Taranaki, She also brought to the wharf the Emma Jane, from Hobart Town.
The schooner Emma Jane arrived in the roadstead yesterday and -was brought to the wharf by the p. s. Dispatch. She left Hobart Town on the 23rd February, and encountered viry heavy weather on the run over. On Thursday and Friday last the weather was so heavy that a considerable quantity of the cargo had to be thrown overboard. She brings a large cargo of Tasmanian produce, consigned io D. Girdwood and Co. The following is a return of the cost of New Zealand lighthouses during the year 1871-72 :-Tiri Tiri, L 522 6s 8d ; Farewell Spit, L 713 0s 6d ; Nelson, L 239 5s 2d ; Mana Island, L 517 12s2d; Pencarrow Head, L 605 19s 8d; Cape Campbell. : L551~j5»-i-««i~,' GodleK-J^'V^^<^^w-2cn-^ranoa Head, 3Cfts2Bs sdj. Nugget Point, L 506 12s 4d : Dog Island, LI 150 8s 7d. It is curious to note the great variety in the cost of maintenance. This is doubtless accounted for by the varied difficulty of access. The amount voted for the marine department for the financial year 1871-2 was L 10 ,175. The sum expended has been L 7308 Gs. The amount of fees collected under the steam .Navigation Act, the Merchant Ships' Officers Act, and sale of charts was L 591 13s Gd. I
