The steamer Charles Edward, 'with Nelson and Hokirika cargo, and a large number of --passengers, arrived in port yesterday morning from the latter port. The English mail, which sbe bad brought to the Coast, had previously been forwarded from Hokitika. Yesterday the Dispatch towed out the schooner Spray, bound for Lyttelton with a cargo of coal, and assisted the Io to the Cobden side of the river, where the latter has been beached for the purpose of undergoing an external overhaul. Return tickets, from Hokitika to Greymonth, at jingle fares, are already announced as inducements to excursionists during the races. The B.s. Rangitoto left Hobson's Bay at 3 p.m. on the 6th inst., cleared the Heads at 6.30 p.m., and Wilson's Promontory at 5.40 a.in. on the 7th. Experienced north-easterly winds for the first three days ; afterwards strong gales and heavy sea from the same quarter until arrival off Hokitika, at 10 30 a.m. on the 12th. Left Hokitika at 1.30 p.m. on the 12th, and arrived off Greymouth at 3.30 p.m., and was tendered in the evening by the p.s. Dispatch. The Aborigine, for Hokitika, and the Maid of Erin, for Westport, sailed from Port Phillip Heads on the 5 th. The brigantine Sarah and Mary, from Greymouth, arrived in Hobßon's Bay on the sth, having bet- n only 26 days away on her trip to the West Coast. Commodore Matthew Fontaine Manry died at Lexington, Virginia, on the Ist February, aged 67 years. This distinguished astronomer and hydrographer was born in Spottsylvania, Virginia, in 1806. In 1825, he first entered the United States navy as a midshipman. His labors in organising the United States observatory, as well as his investigations with regard t.o the winds, and currents of the sea, are familiar as household words to all who take an interest in snch- subjects. On the outbreak of the civil war. Lieutenant Maury took service in the Confederate cause, where he was promoted to a Commodoreship. Since the war he has been living in Richmond, Va., in retirement.
