COMMERCIAL.

Christchujich. — The Timeareports :— The grain market remains quiet, as the farmers are either securing their stacks or are busy threshing. They are holding back in the hope of obtaining l better prices ;but the principal purchaser^ see do hope for any improvement in the face of the low rates ruling in South Australia and Victoria, and likewise the scarcity of tonnage to England. Of oats, buyers do not seem disposed to lay in stocks at present prices, thinking to see them down to Is 9d and ls'lOd ; for early delivery 2s is being paid./ Barleyj jsj much sought after, and 68 is paid freely for prime lots. Butter is much easier, and 6£d is the rate.- Cheede, on the contrary, is firm at 6d; Hams and bacon are quoted at 9d to 9£d.

Oamaeu.— The Times reports no actual transactions in the grain market. For wheat, farmers are asking 4s 3d, but -buyers prices appear to range from 3s 9d to 4s. The large surplus, and consequent low rates in Adelaide, will probably result in Auckland drawing most of her supplies from thence. Quotations are, however, just at present, only problematical, but in a week or fortnight definite rates will be fixed. Barley is scarce, and in good demand.; 6s 3d can be obtained for it in Christchurch, and the value in Oamaru should, therefore, be about 5s 6d or 5s 9d. Oats will likely open at from Is lOd to 2s.
