MEETING OF SOUTH BEACH MINERS.
A public meeting of miners on the South Beach was held at the Nelson Hotel, on Friday, the 13th inst., for the porpose of taking the necessary steps to oppose theprpposed granting of Hill and Hampton's application for a pastoral lease on the South Beach. There waa a very large attendance of miners, and Mr J. Colton was voted to the chair. After he had explained the purpose for which the meeting had been called, Mr W. Major moved, and Mr Power seconded — "That this meeting is of opinion that the granting of the pasturage lease to Messrs Hill and Hampton is highly detrimental to the interests of miners, and others residing on the South Beach." — Carried. It was moved by Mr M'Grath, seconded by Mr Major and carried — "That this meeting is of opinion that the said pasturage lease should be cancelled in consequence of the greater portion of it being reserved and now occupied for mining purposes." It was moved by Mr D. MorrKSEY, seconded by Mr H. Strtjgagak, and agreed to — "That this meeting is of opinion that the said Pasturage Lease is especially unjust to the mining community, as Clause 23 " Gold Fields Act, 1866," debars them from any redress for damages caused by cattle, &c, to their dams, reservoirs, races, fluming or other mining property." Moved by Mr Wooicook, seconded by Mr Gulicctddy, and carried^-" That this meeting is of opinion that owing to notices . being posted, bearing signature 'of Mr Warden Revell, requesting persons inteiv ested in the determining of the said pasj turage lease to attend the next sitting of the Waste Lands Board, and as the aggrieved are so numerous and cannot conveniently wait on the Board, it is desirable to appoint delegates to represent them, and give evidence on their behalf." It was then resolved that Messrs Colton and M'Grath be appointed delegates to wait upon the Westland WasteLands Board, and represent the matter at its next meeting. It was then agreed that a memorial on the subject be prepared, and Messrs J*^tf M'Grath and Allone canvas for signatures from the Nelson Hotel to Greymouth, and Messrs J. Byrnes and M'Gillicuddy from Nelson Hotel sonth. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the meeting adjourned.
