WELLINGTON COMPANY TO WORK THE GREY COAL MINE.
GREAT FIRE IN CHRISTCHURCH. WANGANUI AND NELSON RACES. [NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Feb. 14. The new Theatre was opened last night. 900 persons were present. A meeting was held to-day for the purpose of establishing a company to work the Grey coal mine 3, the Superintendent in the chair. Resolutions were passed in favor of forming a company with a capital of L 50,000, in LlO shares, of which L 6 only would be called up, in easy calls. Onethird of the shares are allotted in Wellington, and the rest throughout the Colony. Chrisxchitkch, Feb. 14. Wheat, 4s ; oats, 2s ; butter easier, at sixpence. A great fire took place in Colombo street. Six small shops and one house were totally destroyed ; estimated loss, L3OOO. The South British Company loses L 600; New Zealand, L 300; Victoria, L 10 0; Liverpool, Ll5O. A beautiful silver tea service was presented by the Superintendent last night to Captain Jenkins, of the John Knox, in recognition of his exertions in saving people from the City of Newcastle. The Wanganui races yesterday were a great success. Black Eagle's defeat by Creepiug Jenny created some excitement. Dtjnedin, Feb. 14. Flour, Ll3. Arrived — Chatanga, from New York. Nelson, Feb. 14. The races were well attended. The Waimea Steeplechase was won by Modesty. The Great Waimea Handicap by Miseltoe. The Wakefield Free Handicap by Rustic. Auckland, Feb. 14. The Hauhaus in the Aotea and Kawhia districts are restarting the flour-mills and are. going to open the harbor to vessels to carry flour away, and establish free intercourse between the races. Fourteen thousand one hundred nineteen shares in the National Bank are applied for.
