COMMERCIAL.

Grey River Argus Office, Thursday evening. The amount of revenue received at the C astoms on goods passed for home consumption to-day was £211 8s 7d.

Christchujrch. — The Lyltdton Times of the 10th inst. reports : — The grain market continues quiet, as the farmers are too busy securing their crops to care to come to town. Several samples of wheat have been offered, but the bulk of these show signs of the weather, and a very large proportion will be quite unfit for shipment. This is very unfortunate, as there will be a large surplus for export. The principal buyers are not disposed, at present, to pay over 4s, even for best samples, while sales have been made at 3s 6d, 3s 9d, and 3s lOd, as per quality. Barley is still eagerly inquired for, and Cs would be freely paid for prime malting samples. Milling oats are also wanted, but the samples offering so far are gnly fit for ordinary food. Good bright samples have been tiuitted at 2s ; but there is no disposition on the part of the larger buyers to lay in stock at these figures, so that prices are likely to decline to Is lOd. Butter has been sold freely at 74d, and a good demand still exists. Cheese also meets a fair inquiry, at S^d to Gd for prime samples. Hams and bacon advanced Id during the week, and are now 9d to 9£d. The business in cattle is rather limited at present, as the farmers, who are the chief buyers of grazing stock, are at present too busy with their harvest to attend the yards. The supply of fat cattle coming forward for public sale is limited, and consequently the prices reached are higher than circumstances warrant. We quote beef at 17s 6d per 1001 b, although, for the reason above given, the price is sometimes considerably higher at the yards.
