COUNTY COUNCIL.

[condensed prom west coast times.] Thursday, February 6. Mr Kennedy moved and Mr Smiti seconded--" That, in the absence of the Chairman of the Council, Mr Barff tak< the chair." THE BRUNNER RAILWAY. The Chairman drew attention to tw( telegrams which had been received by tht County Chairman in respect to the Brunner Railway. The Council haying resolved itself into Committee, the following telegrams wert read : — " County Council seem to entirely misunderstand real meaning of the proposal of Government respecting Brunner Railway. The County revenues are not in any way rendered liable, and the Government in asking consent of Council to security of Coal Reserve is simply doing so out of courtesy, as Reserve is still vested in the Government. I would strongly adyise concurrence with Government proposal, as, if not, railway will be indefinitely postponed. Of course Government could take Coal Reserve now, but they wish to act cordially with the Council. — W. H. Harrison." "Government much embarrassed by non-receipt of reply to message about Brunnerton and Greymouth Railway. Please reply." — John Hail." Mr Bonar moved— "That the Council concurs with the proposal of the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, with respect to

the Brunner Railway, as contained in telegram No. 49, and that a telegram to such effect be forwarded to Wellington this night." The motion was seconded by Mr Kennedy, and after a short discussion, passed without dissent. Progress was ordered to be reported, Council resumed, and the report of the Committee was adopted. •[ ■■ • - PUBLIC WORKS.
