Per Charles Edward, for Hokitika: 6 half tierces tobacco, 1 case do, 1 case cigars, Schlichting Bros ; 17 hides, Ashton ; 1 case hawttes, 1 box tin, 1 parcel, Cowlishaw and Plaiated ; 2 bales leather, Sedgwick and Co. A steamer from Melbourne, the Tararua— another for Melbourne, the Albion— and a third, from Hokitika, the Charles Edward, are due at this port to-day. I H.M.S. Dido, Captain Chapman, has returned to Auckland. She left Duuedin, after a stay of a month, on December 27. and made the Chatham Islands on January 5, where she cast anchor. On the day following (January 6) Captain Chapman assembled the principal settlers and chiefs, Maoris and Maoriores, to witness gun practice. They availed themselves generally of the invitation. At the conclusion of the practice, Captain Chapman addressed the natives, and said that it afforded him much pleasure to see them theie, and to hear that they were so peacably disposed to the whites. He hoped sincerely that they would continue to bs friendly disposed towards the Europeans. His ship was one of Queen Victoria's ships, and he /Captain Chapman) had come there as the representative of tbe Queen. In that capacity he would visit them from time to time ; and he hoped, on each succeeding visit, to find as satisfactory an account of them as he had now received. The principal Maori chief stood up and replied to Captain Chapman. He said that it was the wish of the natives to be on good terms with the whites— that it was no use being otherwise, as they all lived- in a paunikin.
