The Northumberland^ armour-plated steamship, belonging to the Channel Squadron, came into collision with the Hercules, another ironclad, off Madeira, during a gale. The shock was tremendous, and tlie vessels were only saved by their watertight compartments. A serious mutiny has occurred on board the sleam frigate Aurora, detached on particular service. The Home News states that eight officers have been peremtorily ordered to resign, and in default of their obeying the order, they will be removed to the retired list. The Times states that the Sultan of Turkey has authorised the raising of a loan of 25 millions, for the extension of railways in the Derbeker. January 6. Sir James M'Culloch has officially accepted the appointment of Agent-General for Victoria. The well-known firm of Pawson and Co., warehousemen, of St. Paula Churchyard, has failed, with liabilities ti- r r±~-.T..finn,nnn The New Zealand InvestmenT^Conrpany, for the purchase of mining shares, has been started, with a capital of L 50.000. The supplies of tin are increasing. The current price is L 9 above the average of the year, but a decline is probabh, and caution is recommended. The probable stock of wool for th,e February sales will be 120,000 bales. An increased supply has been received from all places, the River Plate excepted. Arrived— City of Agra, from Melbourne, October 5. A South Australian 5 per cent, loan of LIOO,OOO is announced. Money is quiet and lower. The stock markets are active. The South Australian Bank has declared a dividend of 10 per cent. Count Beust and the Due de Gramont re corresponding relative to the latter's disclosures as to Austria being pledged to support France during the late war. M. Correlles, the French Minister, accredited to the Vatican, has returned to Paris, and his non-acceptance of the ambassadorship indicates a disagreement between M. Thiers and the Pope. Berlin, Jan. 4. it is. stated that in Berlin the relations existing between England and Russia and the future policy to be followed in Central Asia has been discussed. According to what has transpired, it seems probable that a course of action will be adopted in the countries between the territories i of the two powers in Asia which will .' render disputes impossible.
