NEW RIVER DISTRICT.

(from our own co-respondent.) . January 8. After the Christmas festivities there is very little to chronicle in mining matters. Some fair gold however, is, reported to be found at Maori Creek, that will give good returns to. a few miners who have been fortunate in securing claims. There has not been anything further heard from the General Government respecting the money they are. to advance to the Hibernian and the New River Water Race -Companies. Estimates of the work that has been done have been made, and the men are now anxiously waiting for the subsidy. There is wanted a little more, expedition ou the part of the Government I if they really intend rendering assistance, as men become tired of waiting month after, month and no money coining forward. Now is the time that it could be laid out to advantage, and the works pushed forward so tjjat they might be turned to profitable account before the expiration of another year. As the elections are now over and the County Council again in session, it would be desirable to bring under public notice some of the many wants that are required in the district. First and foremost, the road from Marsden to Maori Creek requires " to be put into proper repair. Some short distance, about threequarters of a mile, that is now a private track leading into Maori Creek from the Cliftcn track, must be purchased; It would be useless continuing it to Clifton, as that township must merge into Maori Creekj which is the central position, and from which a public road ia now being

made to German Gully. Maori Creek ; will therefore be the township from which the roads will extend, and it will be imperative on the County Council to compensate the owner of the private track. It would be altogether unfair if this were not done. A free and uninterrupted communication must exist from Marsden to the v p-country diggings. The track up Cockeye , Creek and across to Cariboo will . have to be attended to. Provision was made during the last. sea-, sibn" of the Odaricil for this necessary piece of work.. Novdoubt the member for the district will make, enquiry.. why _it was not proceeded with. A -road; to the Limestone is another necessity which ought to be attended to. A good deal of Uneasiness exists amongst the mining community as to the extension of the southern boundary-line of Block No. 1, Grey district. No one seems to know where it is, or what is the supposed . boundary. It is a matter that affects all parties, and it is a great pity, more pub • licity was not given by the Waste -Lands Board to a matter of so much importance to the miners. Till it is known for a certainty what are now the actual boun-dary-lines of Block I.\ it would be futile to offer any remarks ; they must be postponed till reliable information can be procured.
