THE CHRISTMAS SPORTS.
Tumi) Day— Monday, Deo. 30. A largo concourso again met on the Camp Reserve, yesterday, to witness the sports which were not concluded on Saturday, together with additional events announced by the Committee. The weather was all that could be desired, and such as to cause frequent adjournments by the publ'c to the boothholders' shady apartments, who did an excellent trade during the day in beer, lemonade, and shandy. The spectators seemed to be in excellent sp : rits, and took much interest in the several events, indulging in sweeps, and taking the odds on their respective favorites. The Committee and stewards were all activity, and pushed on the sports with a spirit that satisfied everyone; and general satisfaction was expressed at the attention they paid to every detail. A good course was kept for the ruiining and clear rings for wrestling. Very fair starts were made, and the decision of the judges not murmured at, although on one occasion they had to declare a dead heat. The best of good order was maintained throughout, there being an entire absence of anything in the shape of rowdyism. The programme commenced with the Wrestling, collar and elbow style— First prize, Lls; second, L 5; third, LI; fourth, LI j entrance, ss. FIRST BOUND. STOOD. FELL. Callaghan Kittelty Carton Harvey Duffy Watson SECOND KOUND. Duffy Carton THIRD ROUND. Callaghan (odd man) Duffy Some first-class play was exhibited by Callaghau and Duffy, previous to Callaghan going down, which occupied a considerable time, both men playing with caution. In trying conclusions for the second throw, Duffy measured the ground, thus making them equal. A spell was then given to the men, and when they were called on late in the afternoon to finish, they found their legs would not allow of any hard work, and Duffy allowed himself to go to the ground easily. The prizes were then awarded to Callaghan, 1 ; Duffy, 2. Handicap Race ; of 3 events ; 150, 250 and 400 yards ; points— F: st prize, LlO ; second, L 3 j third, LL. The following was the handicap for the various distances : —
The first event, 150 yds, was well contested by D. Twohill and J. Heaphy.; the latter securing first place, Twohill second, and J. G. Harris third. The 400 yds event then came off, when, after a splendid race, the judges declared a dead heat for first place with Heaphy and Twohill, and awarded Harris th?rd place. The heat between Heaphy and Twohill was then ran off, when Heaphy breasted the tape about two yards in front of his opponent. Heaphy had thus scored 10 points, Twohill 6, and Harris 4. The three men then started for the 250 yards event, but therg was no racing between them, Harris : being allowed to walk to the tape first, Twohill following, and Heaphy taking third place. Heaphy having secured 12 points took first prize. Twohill and Harris, nine points each, divided second and third prizes. Vaulting with the pole— First prize, L 5 ; second, L 2. For the above event four men appeared on the ground, viz., R. Long, J. Heaphy, D. Twohill, and W. Arnold, the lastnamed competitor however being our, of the lists the first round. The leap gradually ascended till,it reached 9ft l^in, when it was cleared easily by $. Hoaphy. The usual trials having been accorded to Twohill and Long without their being successful, J. Heaphy was declared the winner, the other two men dividing the money for second place* It was -evident 'that J. Heaphy, who is a beautiful vaulter, could have cleared several inches more had he been called on. Handicap Mils Race— First prize, L 8; second prizß, L 3; third, LI, For this event there were eight entries, and the handicapping wa3 as follows :—
This was considered the race of the day, being well contested by the several competitors. Bradley led, and ran well till the sixth lap, when he was collared by E. Long. At the last round Vaughan and P. Twohill ran through the field, pissing all the others with the exception of Long° and after a hot race landed theiusolves-fu the above order. Twohill defied his opponent at 4ft 7in, and took Ist prize ; David Twohill 2nd prize. The last event was the Steward's Eace — 100 yards — which was won by Mr Walton. Thus ended the Christmas sports of 3872, and much credit is due to the Committee in getting up and carrying them out in such a successful manner. From the commencement. everything went well,, and much satisfaction was expressed by the spectators at the impartial manner in; which the various event's were conducted, especially at the handicapping for the races, which appeared to please even the competitors. Tlr's was evident by the close manner in which these events were contested, and the utter absence of protests — a very unusual occurrence. The handicappers were Messrs Strike, "Walton, and Woolcock. Mr Strike also acted very efficiently as starter. Mr James Payne, as secretary, was veiy energetic in his endeavor to discharge the onerous duties of his office, and by his efforts added materially to the effective manner in which the Sports of 1872 were carried to a most successful conclusion.
