M'Lean. The p.s Charles Edward sailed for West port and Nelson on Saturday evening, and . the St Kilda, for Wanganui, yesterday afternoon. The s.B Alhambra, Captain Pearce, from Melbourne,' via Coast ports, arrived yesterdvy forenoon and was immediately waited on by the p.s Dispatch, which pnt on board of her 25 passengers for Melbourne and brought ashore 18 passengers for coast ports. The weather was bo fine that the Dispatch ran alongside the Alhambra and transhipped her cargo and passengers, giving her quick despatch to Hokitika, where she would be tendered on the same tide. For some time we have heard rumors that the Lioness was about to leave us. We nope this is not so, seeing how groat a loss her absence would be to the port. Of coarse her owners have their business arrangements to consult in such a matter, but we should have supposed there would be no owns .the Dispatch, and divides^nerample Sofits amongst its members, in the shape of vidends. indeed we are told that a preliminary canvass with that object was entirely successful. — Westland Register. Some time since it waa reported that M'Meckan and Co. intended to run their steamers to the Manukau, calling at New Plymouth, but the route was abandoned. It is now rumored that the Company propose carrying out their original intention, should the requisite support that has been promised be accorded.— Taranaki Herald. At the Auckland Police Court, during the - hearing of a charge against a seaman for disobedience of orders. Captain .Ashby, of "the City of Auckland, handed to the Magistrate a copy of the rules of the Seamen's Mutual Benefit and Protection Society, a society recently started, and said that ho attributed the prisoner's insubordination to that society, as one of the rules says that no member of ■ the society shall ship on home-bound vessels for less than LlO per month ; that rule alono was sufficient to induce men to commit acts by which they could get clear of their vessels, and so be enabled to join this society in asking for such exorbitant rates. His Worship said he was surprised at such a. rate, and ho considered that it would materially damage the mercantile marine of the port if such a high rate of wages should be demanded ; and he was more astonished to see the name of G. E. G. Jackson, Navigating Lieutenant, R.N., as secretary to the society. That gentleman would do far better if ho could return on board one of Her Majesty's ships.
