All doubts as to the existence of a deadlock in matters municipal, through the existence of an informality in the election of the Mayor, were set at re3t last evening by Mr Masters resigning the Mayor's chair, so briefly held, and by his being at once and unanimously re-elected by the Councillors present ; Mr Coates being the only one absent. Mr Masters took his seat on this occasion on the nomination of Messrs Woolcock and Moore — a graceful and creditable action on the part of these two gentlemen, and an action in perfect accordance with their expressed sentiments at the previous meeting. It is well that the matter has thus t ended well, and that the Council concluded the election in the spirit in which they had, as a Council, conducted it throughout. It is always to the credit of a community or a Council that there should be a little healthy ambition to accept the highest honorary office in its offer, instead of an indifference to all honors or responsibilities, and there was just sufficient rivalry in this instance to show that this indifference does not exist here. What is to be hoped is that the burgesses will, on the occasions of municipal elections, exhibit equal interest in their duties, and remember, when they return men to the Council, that the Mayoralty is within the reach of all. The greater number of good men the ratepayers return; the greater guarantee they have of the Councillors honoring them by making a suitable choice, as they have done on this occasion without any difficulty save one, which was merely technical.
