THE PORT DARWIN DISTRICT.
A correspondent of Town and Cmntry writing about the Port Darwin, or, more correctly, Palmerston, rush, says :—- --" The Admiralty chart, which I provided myself with before leaving Melbourne, shows three or four arms of the sea stretching inland from the site of Palmerston, something after the fashion of Sydney harbor, but the. water very much wider and deeper. Southport, which is the nearest water terminus to the present geld deposits, is distant from Palmerston 28 miles by water, and nearly 50 by land. Eighty miles inland are the reefs, so that this will make the gold distant from the seat of local government, 30 miles by land, and 108. by water and land. Jf the reefs yield according to anticipations, and should there be any further gold discoveries, it is probable that Southport will be an extensive township in the
future, although previous residents favor Palmerston in this opinion. Two miles from Southport is a waterfall ; true it only tumbles down about 12ft, but its surroundings render it beautiful, and in the rainy season its Bteady roar can be heard echoing afar through the hills and woodlands. The whole of -the •adjacent country here. is nicely timbered with blue and red gum^ ironbark^and bldodwood."
