ARAHURA DISTRICT,
Last evening's Hokitika Evening Star says that the election for the Arahura district was that morning causing a good deal of excitement, principally from the fact of a gentleman in town having proceeded to that district with three Chinese interpreters to canvass their countrymen to vote for Mr White. When the polling booth at Stafford Town was opened, two of the Chinese and their conductor made their way. to the door which, however, was not so easily entered, as some of the electors did not feel inclined to make way. After a little excited talk someone's fist came very forcibly against the head of one of the Celestials, and then the constable was referred, -to, whereupon the conductor himself stood a good chance of being engaged in an interesting and exciting combat. 3?he interior of the booth was at last reached by the two Mongolians and their "friend." Only one of the Chinese was allowed as an interpreter. The Chinese "friend" on coming out was treated to a little complimentary language, which probably, before the day end 3, will result in testing the durability and thickness of some of the elector's heads.
