On Saturday morning, lie 30th nit, a fire broke ont in the Freemasons/ Hotol, at the corner of Park and) Moray atrefiß, Emerald Hill. Constable Eraser, -who was on duty, roused. up the inmates, and the fire, which had, broken out below the counter, was extinguished by him, -with the assistance of two neighbors. The damage done, was trifling. Thero is no account of how the fire occurred. A blow has been struck at the Banting system. We learn from the Sydney Morniniq R&ald that a fat man has been let oft* from serving upon a jury. Our contemporary says that the gentleman "sent a letter to the judge earnestly - begging to be excused on account of his great weight. The stoat party pathetically stated that he was twenty-seven stone wekht, and could not possibly stand the fatigue of a whole day's martyrdom in the jury box. The lamentable petition of the obese juryman created, some merriment amongst the carehardened court officials, but the circumstance »tated was kindly allowed to be ». valid excuse by the courteous and comr passionate judge."
