Melbourne.— The Argxw of the 2nd insfc. reports : — In the import markets business throughout the forenoon was not marked by anything of " srspecial character. Breadstuffs are firmer, the action of buyers during the last day or two having imparted considerable Bteadinef js to a market previously very irregular and unsettled. Trade parcels of flour are utill moving off at Ll7 to Ll7s 10s, though, of course, quantities could not be placed ut the quotation. Holders of wheat are likewise stiffer in their ideas. Buyers, however, cannot be got to operate beyond actual requirements ; 6s 6d to 7s, and barely up to 7s 6d, continues to be asked. Shipments are still going forward to England, We are informed that room has been engaged on board the Cardigan Castle fora thousand bags New Zealand. Oats command a good deal of attention ; we hear of a line of 700 bags, and one of 600 bags, good feeding, having been taken up at 3s lid, and a shade under. Maize is disposed of in parcels of 500 bags at 3s, while small lots are disposed of at 3s Id. Cornsacks are again coming prominently into notice. We hear of one line of 300baleshaving been taken up on Adelaide account at the extreme fignrea of 15s 9d. For dried fruits there is a moderate inquiry, and sales of currants are making at s&d. Tho demand, however, is much less for the season than might be expected ; nevertheless, holders and importers are. sanguine of obtaining still higher rates. Of raisins there is a great scarcity. Hops are moving off for trade purposes at a trifle easier rates, holpera being anxious to make room for the new shipments, expected shortly to arrive, of Kent's 1S71 ; good to best samples can now be bought at Is 9d to 2a. Sugars have not been much asked for. Business fot the week will commence on Monday by the offer of the first parcel of the Victorian Beetroot Company's manufacture yet sent to market, and doubtless a good deal of interest ■will^ be evinced in the result of the sale. Various balances of Mauritius shipments will be offered at same time.
