In an address to the electors he says:— "l cannot deny. that, I should have preferred being first at the right end of the poll instead of first at the wrong ; but the fault was yours, not mine, and although knocked down this time, I shall be up and ready for the next round whei opportunity offers." . All the people at Port Darwin seem to' hays plenty of tiuie on their hands, and some of them a little spare money. How they amuse themselves the following par, from tho Ballarat Sfyxr will show :— " At a very early hour this morning we received the following telegram from Port Darwin :— Oblige for wager : Was the common English rat known in Ballarat iv '52?' To this we replied: '.No, not known now. About six have been seen, imported with goods here.' We understand the cost of this telegram and its answer was about L 2 6a." '
