The steamer Charles Edward arrived in port yesterday morning, from Hokitika. She brought the West Coast portion of tho San Francisco mail to that port, and the mailbags for (Jreymouth were forwarded by Saturday's coach. The schoouer Cleopatra, laden with coal, was towed oat on Saturday evening, Bailing for Lyttelton. The nexfc vessel to sail with coal is the Isabella. The port for which she is to sail is apparently short of coal, for yes* terday, although Sunday and a holiday with most people, it was considered necessary to carry on the work of loading her. If not ne6esßary, there was an unbecoming show of work on a day when work is usually and with propriety abandoned. The s.B. St. Hilda, from this pott, arrived at Wanganui on Saturday night. The s.B. Tararua, from Nelson, is expected here early to-morrow morning, when she will take passengers for Melbourne direct. Messrs J. Cbesoey and Go's brigantine Zephyr, from Melbourne direct, arrived in the Hokitika roadstead early on Friday morning, and was at once towed into porb by the p. 8. Lioness. The Christian M'Ausland, one of Messrs Patrick Henderson and Co's ships, chartered by Messrs Shaw, Savill, and Co, Bailed for Otago on September 6th, with 323 immigrants. This vessel will probably make a rapid passage, and is expected to arrive in the first week in December.
A vessel was expected to sail from London for the Bluff about September 30 with about 250 immigrants. At a meeting of the Southland Railway Committee last week, the following resolution was carried : " That the Provincial Government be urged to send Seriodical instalments of farm laborers and omestic servants, pending direct shipments of immigrants to the Bluff, a supply of ploughmen and domestic servants being at present urgently needed."
